How to Make Money Off Your Closet

Spring cleaning might be over, but if you’re like me, graduating from college and moving to a new city, it is only beginning. As someone with a tendency to hoard things, I have trouble letting go to that hot pink Kate Spade handbag that I haven’t worn since Freshmen year. Not anymore! I have found a few amazing ways to make money off the items in my closet.

Now I have some free space, extra cash, and a lot less to move to my soon-to-be tiny New York City apartment.

Where to Sell Designer Items: Poshmark

The Poshmark app is incredibly easy to use and perfect to sell any items that were originally $50 or more.

Shoppers can make offers on your items, comment questions, and even bundle for discounts. My favorite part of this interaction is also that you can make counteroffers and see what your earnings would be every step of the way.

If an item sells for under $15, they keep $2.95. If you sell for over $15, they keep 20%. I have found this to be fair and honestly less than most consignment shops where you have the hassle of going in person and not being able to market your goods.

I have made five sales so far and could not be happier. When an item sells, you are emailed a shipping label. You print it and mail the item. It is literally that easy!

Where to Sell Fast Fashion: Plato’s Closet

I love Forever 21 and H&M as much as the next girl, but do not have the patience to try to resell a $15 item on Poshmark. The amount you would make is not worth the hassle, in my opinion, so I love Plato’s Closet! You can bring in literal trashbags full of clothing items and they choose what they want.

In my experience, they offer $2-$8 depending on the item and condition of it. While they can be somewhat picky about wear, I find that these rates are great to get rid of those items that you just do not wear frequently.

MY GOAL

As always on Sophistication and Sparkles, my goal is to help you get the most out of life during your college years and early twenties. That includes making money back on items that are sitting around clogging up your closet! I hope that this post gave you an idea of how you can sell some of your items and turn your closet into your bank!

Where to Shop for Spring Break Sunglasses

Spring break is almost here, which means its time to shop for some good deals on some new sunglasses. I personally like to find good deals on glasses because I am constantly loosing or breaking them…so spending under $50 is a good way to prevent tears. Glassesshop.com is an amazing site to find and customize affordable prescription eyeglasses and prescription sunglasses.

How it Works

While I got sunglasses, this is a great place to shop for eyeglasses online too. I personally don’t need glasses frequently and have a pair, so the sunglasses were more appealing to me. You can never have too many! Especially with these deals and trends, you cannot go wrong. Here are some that I am loving on the website now:

You get to pick a frame, pick a lens, and add a prescription (or not)! It’s very easy and fun to customize a lens color and polarity for sunglasses.

The Glasses Quality

Overall, I am very pleased with the quality. The frames are a sturdy plastic and seem as durable as expected. They fit well and while I do keep them in my bag, I feel that I could leave them in my purse without them breaking.

I cannot speak to the quality of their prescriptions though, so I apologize for not having more information on that!

Sneaker Trend Done Cheap

As a girly girl growing up, I was never one to wear sneakers. When they became trendy last fall, I continued my habit and avoid the trend. Well…I finally embraced the sneaker trend, and I love it. Nothing has every been so comfortable and so stylish at one time.

If you’re like me, you like good deals on trendy items. Today’s post is a big round up of the trendiest sneakers I could find for under $50 each.

Business Casual Attire on a Budget

With summer here, it is officially internship season. I, personally, love working. What I love more than working? Business casual attire. I find wearing work clothes to be the ultimate game of dress up. Not only do I get to act older than I feel, but also I get to look the part.

As I get ready to move to New York City for my internship this summer, I want to expand my wardrobe.

Last summer, I actually ran into a bit of a problem. I—for some odd and unknown reason—own mostly business formal attire. My job, however, was business casual. I was in Washington DC and had to quickly buy more shirts and it took a bit of a toll on my spending plans.

In efforts to avoid buying overpriced clothes last minute, I am planning ahead and going to my my local outlet mall.

Want to learn how to make an impression at the career fair? Check out this post!

Why You Should Shop at Outlet Malls

You save money! Outlet malls sell the exact same clothes as the mall, just on a slightly different time frame. For work clothes, this is the perfect option because you don’t need to be 100% on trend.

What Outlets are the Best for Business Casual Attire

  • Banana Republic: Banana Republic is easily my favorite outlet, as of this past winter. This winter, I realized how amazing their sales were. They will have fabulous shirts marked down from $75 to as low as $2 dollars. It’s pure insanity and bliss. On an average day, they will have many business casual blouses on sale for $10-$12, which is honestly an amazing deal for such stellar quality.
    • SALE ALERT: right now through memorial day they have an extra 50% off clearance.
  • Loft: Loft is another favorite of mine. At 5 foot 2 inches, I find their petite pants to be a perfect fit for me—no hemming necessary. They also have great sales at their outlets and often offer an additional percentage off the sales price!
    • SALE ALERT: right now through memorial day they have an extra 40% off clearance.
  • Ann Taylor: The grown up version of Loft, Ann Taylor often has the same fabulous deals and professional clothing. I have found some amazing Work skirts for well under $20 here, and would highly recommend checking it out.
    • SALE ALERT: right now through memorial day they have an extra 40% off clearance.
  • JCrew: A fan favorite, JCrew is always a good option for professional clothes. I find their outlet to be a bit more expensive that the others, but if you are patient and look diligently, you can definitely find some good deals!
    • SALE ALERT: right now through memorial day they have an extra 40% off clearance.
  • Kate Spade: I love a good work bag. I think that the perfect work tote bag for a women, is equivalent to a briefcase. At the Kate Spade Outlet, you can find amazing deals on quality bags. I have seen many fabulous tote bags there for well under $100, which is pretty great for a formal leather bag.
    • SALE ALERT: right now through memorial day they have an extra 60% off the entire store with an extra 20% off handbags. That means a $200 handbag is now only $64!
